January 19’s KZN10 basketball results throw up interesting pointers

The first full weekend of school basketball matches in the KZN10 took place over this past weekend. Rain did have a say in a few of the clashes but without exception every 1st team got an opportunity to play:

Michaelhouse vs Westville

Of note in this particular fixture was going to be the match-up at 1st team level. Michaelhouse were the form team of Stayers season and they produced a convincing win at the Westville Multipurpose Centre. Michaelhouse 4 victories/Westville 10 victories.

Michaelhouse next host DHS while Westville’s next game – against Glenwood – has been cancelled.

Clifton vs Northwood

A good win for Clifton 1sts against their Durban North rivals. Northwood won the A team games in the age groups which bodes well for their future performances. The win total – Clifton 4 victories and Northwood 5 victories – indicates a great match-up for the schools.

Clifton next make the journey up to Bothas Hill to take on Kearsney and Northwood travel to Hilton College.

St Charles College vs Glenwood (Glenwood scores first)

A tough day at the office for the lads from Glenwood – there is hope that they can build on their U16A result as it seems like it was a tightly contested affair.

St Charles will feel relieved to finally get their season under way. As our interview with * Craig Gilchrist suggests, the Maritzburg private school is looking to make waves this season. St Charles 4 victories Glenwood 0.

* Check out Mr Basketball, the SA men’s head coach, SA legend and Saints’ full-time Basketball Specialist Craig Gilchrist’s fascinating KZN10.com video interview by clicking on his name link in the paragraph above.

Glenwood’s fixture this week against Westville has been cancelled, whilst St Charles play host to Maritzburg College in a 6pm evening game on Friday 25 January 2019.

This is a match that heralds the culmination of a special day in the life of the 144-year-old institution, the opening and renaming of their revamped basketball venue – splendid facility.

At 10.30am Friday a ceremony will be held at the St Charles College  Indoor Centre, in which the facility will be named the Samukele Khumalo Arena, in honour of the recent former Saints head prefect and basketball star whose burgeoning young life, so full of promise, was so tragically cut short.

Come 6pm Friday, just under 8 hours after the christening of the brand new Samukele Khumalo Arena, the much-anticipated local derby between Saints and their cross-town friends Maritzburg College will play out to a packed arena.

Sam, the boys will do you proud.

DHS vs Kearnsey College

The matches were originally supposed to be held at DHS but the inclement weather which affected most of the KZN10 cricket prevented DHS from defending their home court.

The A team games and 1st team were moved to Kearsney College to at least give the boys a game.

The results indicate that the Kearsney basketball programme is operating at elite level. DHS can be disappointed, as zero victories on the day is not indicative of their quality.

Next up for Kearsney is Clifton at home whilst DHS make the journey up to Balgowan to take on a powerful Michaelhouse side.

Maritzburg College vs Hilton College

A good set of results for Maritzburg College whilst Hilton could feel that they were slightly underdone coming into this fixture.

With a new coach at the helm of Hilton it may take a few weeks for them to develop an identity but if last season’s results are anything to to go, success is round the corner. College 10 victories – Hilton 1 victory.

Next up for College is, as mentioned in some detail above, St Charles, whilst Hilton host Northwood.

Baskets… Westville Maritzburg College… What an absolute cracker!

On what was a blisteringly hot Saturday afternoon in the KZN capital, the Maritzburg College and Westville first basketball teams locked horns in an Alan Paton Memorial Hall packed with vocal supporters.

Prior to the start, both teams lined up for a minute’s silence (feature pic) to honour Westville’s senior deputy headmaster, Mr Nestor Pierides, who had passed away during the week, a man who had done much to build the Westville sports programme.

The clash marked the beginning of the 2019 KZN schools basketball year and as the KZN10.com match preview indicated, this tussle was slated to be a ding-dong affair between two of the KZN10 giants – and it certainly lived up to the hype.

As a Stayers’ side, College beat Westville 64-55 in the 4th term of 2018 so there was much anticipation for the return encounter.

Titan Technologies. Consult KZN’s security professionals. https://www.titantech.co.za/

As Maritzburg College MIC basketball Jenny Orchard says: “The shouting captain for 2019 Ollie Zondi ensured that the supporters sang war cries throughout the match and this added to the wonderful atmosphere at the game, also showcasing what schoolboy sport is all about.”

The home side led the first quarter by 2 points and the same score margin at halftime indicates the closeness of this contest.

The third quarter proved to be the game-changer.

Be it basketballers or you & me. We all need ‘Time Out’. https://www.fordoun.com/

The third quarter started with the teams locked in an intense arm wrestle as neither side could really dictate play for any extended period of time. Every time Westville narrowed the gap College would score a couple of quick baskets to maintain a 6- to 7-point lead.

“Up to that point every time College’s offence and defence found synergy they would take the game away from Westville,” Maritzburg College first team basketball coach Zeke Oosthuis told KZN10.com

Maritzburg College wing forward Liam van Rensburg is in possession. Team-mate Luyanda Mawela is closely guarded by Westville wing forward Cameron Best while WBHS team-mate & number 10 Kgopotso Matlena is in the key.

And it was during one these better spells of play by Maritzburg College that the turning point in the game occurred.

College were in control of the game and placing enormous pressure on Westville to make up their points deficit on the scoreboard.

College stole Westville ball and set off on the fast break, but the layup was unexpectedly missed and in the ensuing tussle College lost the ball to Westville.

On the very next Westville possession, College were again able to manipulate the Westville defence, and a College player broke for another uncontested layup but the point’s opportunity was missed once again.

So, to the Breakdown of Quarters 1 and 2 and 3

The air seemed to be sucked out of the building.

“Westville, sensing that College had failed to land the killer blow, took the opportunity and started hunting for offensive rebounds, placing enormous pressure on the College guards to box out all members of the attacking team,” says coach Zeke.

Westville ended this decisive third quarter stronger, with College fighting to keep their lead. The quarter ended with College still holding the Westville team at arm’s length, but the College lead was now a “gettable” 5 points, as opposed to the 9 points is should have been.

Westville started the fourth quarter sensing that they had gained the ascendancy, and a marked feature of the opening minutes of that final quarter was the urgency with which they played.

“Westville, who up to that point had tried to score by running traditional plays for some key players, threw caution to the wind and aggressively attacked the College defence, taking every opportunity to drive to the basket,” says MC coach Zeke Oosthuis.

“College, who had contained Westville quite handily for most of the game, seemed to be thrown by Westville’s confidence and determination, and the lads in Red Black & White committed numerous unnecessary fouls in trying to stop the avalanche of Westville attacks.”

Hilliar & Gray’s Wendy Gray has a special interest in children’s vision. http://www.hilliarandgray.co.za/childrens-vision/

Midway through the 4th and final quarter Westville, behind some inspired play from SA U15 player Ethan Brooke, took the lead and ultimately control of the game.

4th QUARTER A MATCH-CHANGING Westville 19 MC 8

Grade 10 basketballer Ethan showing a great deal of big-match temperament in scoring 2 huge 3-pointers to electrify the Westville fan base, and the outcome saw Westville running out 49-43 winners.

Let’s look at Quarters 1 and 2… Even though College won the jump ball, it was Westville who opened the scoring and maintained the lead for a large part of the first quarter. However, with both good offense and defence the home team bounced back from a scoring drought to end that first quarter 11-9 ahead.

Maritzburg College MIC basketball Jenny Orchard: “Halfway through the 2nd quarter College had built a commanding 12-point lead through executing their game plan effectively.

“But, as was the case in the corresponding fixture in the 4th term, College again lost focus in the remaining minutes of the first half as Kgopotso Matlena of Westville exerted his considerable frame in the post and cut the lead to 2 heading into the break.”

MATCH MUSINGS of MC COACH ZEKE OOSTHUIS

“The anticipated one-on-one match-up between Cameron Best of Westville and Liam van Rensburg of College didn’t scale the heights as much as it potentially could have, as both players had moments of brilliance but otherwise cancelled each other out on the day.

“It will be interesting to see how their seasons progress as they may be the top two wing forwards in KZN this year.

“It was a great advert for the health of KZN basketball as two of the premier teams displayed a high level of basketball. As is the case though with talented and competitive 1st teams the margins for error are very fine – a few opportunities missed or taken can be the difference between winning and losing.

“Down the final stretch Westville made the better decisions and played the big possessions better.”

Expert instruction will get you in the driving seat early this year. info@trishsutton.co.za

Westville won the fourth and final quarter by a match-clinching 10-point margin.

“Westville did themselves and their supporters proud, and if the jubilation of the team and boys at the final buzzer is any indicator, this was a match that they really wanted to win and was also a mark of the esteem that they hold Maritzburg College basketball in.

“Maritzburg College, on the other hand, can with reason be left feeling that they let this one get away. After 3 basketball quarters of dominance, they lost the last quarter 19-9, an indicator, possibly, of fitness. A tough lesson to be learned it seems.”

And as Maritzburg College MIC basketball Jenny Orchard says, “Coach Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant once stated, ‘Concentrate on winning the second half’, and this is what the College team need to do for their next game against Hilton College.”

Overall, however, it was a successful day for the Maritzburg College basketball programme, with 16 matches played, College winning 11 and Westville 5.

Coach Zeke looks ahead to Saturday, January 19: “The match-ups offer intriguing story lines. Home side Westville take on the undefeated Michaelhouse team of the 4th [Stayers] term. The corresponding fixture last term was cancelled, so it’s all to play for.”

Maritzburg College make the short journey up the hill to take on Hilton College. Another absolute cracker is in the offing.

Baskets time! Maritzburg College v visitors Westville!

It’s just SECONDS AWAY FROM THE BIG SHOW! Yes, start time in the much-looked-forward-to opening game of the KZN10 schools’ basketball season and all eyes are on the splendid Alan Paton Hall.

Yes folks it’s home side Maritzburg College vs Westville.

KZN10.com asked MC bball coach Zeke Oosthuis a couple of pre-match questions:

Feature image – MC basketball coach Zeke Oosthuis and the army.

“Thanks Jono, it’s great playing Westville as they have a large basketball programme and match us team for team across the board.

“It’s always a tough encounter, 5 years ago as an example MC were number 1 in SA and had just won the prestigious St John’s Johannesburg tournament and we came back and lost to Westville.

“We play them first term and 4th term each year and in 2018 Westville won the first clash with us wining by about 9 points in the fourth term Stayers match.

Those Stayers are back out there today so it’s going to be fascinating. I am not sure if Westville are at full strength but be that as it may a school is only as good as it’s overall basketball programme so we will see.

Alan Paton Hall Basketball – always electric.

“Westville coach Byron Tucker has a clear basketball vision; he is no-nonsense and produces tough organised hard teams.

“The Westville basketball brand? Historically a very good shooting outfit, zonal play, big-size players, last while moving more towards a man-to-man style as I like Maritzburg College to play, albeit in a fast up-tempo fashion.

“Westville shoot well from the outside, they are able to clog up the key, and shoot from the outside, while they don’t give away many points from inside the paint.

“I anticipate a tight affair, I am confident the Red Black and Whites of Maritzburg College – buoyed by their home support, can take this one.

“If Westville bring their A game and their top guys are on song – we may have more depth though – MC are in for a tough challenge.

“We take into the game the knowledge that although we lost the last Stayers match of 2018 to the strong Michaelhouse side at Michaelhouse, we came back strongly and a lot of self-belief was bred in that performance.

“The boys need to carry that through today.”

Thanks Zeke – top stuff.

Best wishes to both sides.

Westville Old Boy: The Luke Schlemmer Weekend

Last month, Westville Old Boy Luke Schlemmer, the KZN Inland senior team captain, put together two milestones innings.

On Friday 5th October vs Gauteng in the CSA Provincial Three-Day Challenge at the Walter Milton Oval Wits University in Johannesburg, the 23-year-old Luke made his maiden first-class century (119 off 215 balls in four minutes short of 5 hours that included 17 fours).

Feature image: KZN Inland captain Luke Schlemmer.

Two days later, on October 7, in the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge match vs Gauteng; Luke played an innings that required a completely different approach.

Luke hit an unbeaten 117 in 110 balls over a period of 2,5 hours, a knock including 15 four and 2 maximums at a strike rate 106.36, the KZN Inland captain taking his team home by 7 wickets with 14.4 overs to spare.

After the 117* off 110 balls vs Gauteng that saw Luke steer KZN Inland to a comfortable win. Sohail Mahmoud and Grant Roelofsen played key roles with the bat too.

For Luke, who played for KZN Coastal U19 in his earlier years, it was his second List A century.

KZN10.com asked Schlem to describe these momentous knocks against Gauteng, who as of today, 27 November 2018 are comfortably Pool A log leaders in this national 3-day completion.

“Thanks Jono. The first-class innings was by far the more draining of the two centuries I managed to score on that weekend.

“Gauteng have a really good and experienced attack with guys like Nandre Burger and Sean Jamison, who both offer something with the ball throughout the innings.

“I did have periods in my innings where I got a bit of momentum and scored quicker than at other times but it was more about identifying the bowlers’ plans to get me out and finding ways to combat that.

Titan Technologies. “Keeping our eye on your security.” https://www.titantech.co.za/

“At the same time, I needed to be able to score when opportunities presented themselves.”

Jono: Luke, surely that is not easy to achieve, it’s kind of like sitting in the middle of 2 different objectives?

“Sure Jono, it can be tricky at times, but absorbing pressure and being able to stick to each game plan I had towards each bowler really helped.

“Our coach Shane has been a big help, especially mentally; he reads people really well and understands what gets you going and what each cricketer amongst us needs.

SAFE AS HOUSES: Straight bat, past the bowler, runs for the taking. A Luke Schlemmer trademark shot.

“Shane has backed me for a while now so it’s awesome to ‘give back’ in terms of performances and to back up all the work we have done together in the nets and the chats we have had.”

Jono: Yes, personally I have a very high regard for Shane Burger, Luke. What he has done as coach of the KZN Inland senior team over the past number of seasons has been nothing short of remarkable.

Shane Burger has a way about him, a manner of doing things, a calming presence, almost an aura of assured competence that must rub off on his players.

But going back a bit, who else has played a major part in the shaping of Luke Schlemmer the cricketer and Luke Schlemmer the person?

The Year 2018 has been a long innings. Time to put your feet up and reflect. https://www.fordoun.com/

Luke: “My mom and dad (he never played cricket) are my biggest supporters and have both played a huge role in my life and where I am today. They have always given everything to help me on this path I have of chasing my dream.

“Cricketing influences have been the likes of Doug Watson, Fabian Lazarus and Yash Ebrahim, who all played a massive role in getting me into first-class cricket. And, more recently, Shane Burger has added to that.”

Jono: Yip, no one can do it alone. Let’s get on to the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge innings against Gauteng; that unbeaten 117 in 110 that took you Inland guys to such a comfortable win.

Luke: The innings was a lot of fun. A lot of balls hit the middle of the bat. I enjoy hitting through the line on the Highveld wickets.

KZN Inland captain and top-order batsman Luke Schlemmer can adapt his game plan according to what is needed when. Here’s Luke freeing up the arms for a bunt over the inner ring.

“I tried to make use of the Power Play as best I could, as I felt the pitch might get worse and harder to score on as the game went on.

“Spin was a bit harder to score off but I was helped along the way by my Inland batting partners Sohail Mahmoud and Grant Roelofsen.

“Sohail and Grant made the chase a lot easier with some awesome strokeplay.”

Jono: Yes I watched both Grant and Sohail as schoolboys and know exactly what you mean in the strokeplay scenario.

KZN10: Luke, if you had to rate, or compare, the two innings, how would you put it, if that’s possible as they required completely different approaches.

“Jono, I would say that the one-day innings played second fiddle a bit compared to my maiden first class century, which was very special to me, but the one-day century helped the team to a bonus-point win, which made me very proud as a player and captain.”

Jono: Luke, thanks for your time in sharing your thoughts on what I have termed ‘The Luke Schlemmer Weekend’ – and may there be many more.

When the match is tight you need clarity. Clox has the best scoreboards by far. Check out the quality right here https://clox.co.za/

Luke made his first-class and List A debuts, for KZN Inland, as close to exactly two years ago.

After his maiden ton in first-class cricket, as described above, Luke hit his second century in first-class cricket just three weeks later, a knock of 132 against Eastern Province in Port Elizabeth.

560 Match a fitting farewell for Westville & Kearsney matrics

ONE can only begin to imagine the emotion.

The last schoolboy cricket match for a host of Westville and Kearsney College first XI players.

Feature image: Captain my Captain – Bowden’s Oval goodbyes: Robbie Koenig of Kearsney and Matt Pollard of Westville leading their first XI’s for the last time.

And what an absolute box-office smash it was.

On a Bowden’s pitch that would have served the nearby N3 well, 560 runs were scored and just 9 wickets lost.

Hill Premium Quality Cricket Balls stay the distance. www.hillcricketballs.co.za

Kearsney lost the toss in overcast and windy conditions and were put in to bat on a belter of a batting track. Initially 1/1, Kearsney recovered beautifully to register an impressive 279/7 in their 50 overs.

Kearsney College captain and KZN U19 all-rounder Robbie Koenig top-scored with 55, while Cody Carmichael (36), Jordan Bamber (47), Jean-Luc Talbot (42) and William Patton (39) also tested the scorers’ arithmetic.

When the going gets tough, get your defensive set-up sorted with the experts. www.titantech.co.za

The key was that Westville now knew exactly what was required of their top-order batters – and boy, did they respond in stunning fashion.

Understanding what worked and what was best left alone – having watched the Kearsney batters go about their innings – Westville used the track impressively and reached the target with just three wickets down and a comfortable three overs to spare.

And fittingly it was head boy and first XI captain, the KZN Coastal U19 all-rounder Matthew Pollard (42*) who steered the good ship Westville safely into harbour, alongside Ethan Matkovich (65*).

A great platform had been laid for the finishers by Westville’s provincial players Jared Oosthuizen (57) and Caleb Pillay (72).

It was a truly great batting wicket and the difference probably was that Kearsney did not convert their great start into more half-centuries.

Westville managed a great run chase to deservedly win by seven wickets.

Basketball thriller: Westville finish strong, Kearsney hold on

An 8-point lead after the first quarter; an 18-point lead at half-time; 11 points ahead going into the final quarter; then the Kearsney College firsts’ wheels almost came off.

The Westville firsts basketball team were not done yet; upping the pace they won the final stanza 28-20 but in the end it was just a three-pointer too far to make up; the Kearsney lads edging them out by 77-74 to take the honours.

Kearsney started well, finding fluidity on offence and scoring freely.

Westville didn’t appear to have an answer for the Kearsney offence, but also managed to score easily on Kearsney’s defence.

The second quarter was much the same, with Kearsney outscoring their opponents, but also allowing easy baskets to be scored against them.

Kearsney went into half time with a commanding 43-25 lead.

There was not much change in the third quarter, with Kearsney comfortably 57-46 ahead.

The fourth quarter was a different ball game.

Westville upped the tempo and found their scoring rhythm.

Kearsney made some silly defensive errors and allowed Westville to shoot free throws and cut significantly into their lead, while not being able to make their own free throws.

The quarter almost saw Kearsney lose a game in which they were in total control for most of the match.

It was a valuable lesson to the Kearsney players not to underestimate their opposition and to remain focused until the final whistle.

Kearsney managed to hold on to a 77-74 win.

Kingsmead Mynahs tour trials for KZN grade 11 boys on Sunday

The Kingsmead Mynahs invite all cricketers who are returning to school next year and have not made a representative side to a trial in the indoor facility at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Sunday 4th November 2018 starting at 8.30am.

Mynahs are particularly looking for cricketers who made the final trials for KZN Coastal and KZN Inland but missed the cut.

Hill Premium Quality Cricket Balls were developed and perfected by Durban-based Maritzburg College 2006 cricketer Stuart Hill when he saw the need for high-quality yet affordable 4-piece and 2-piece cricket balls in the SA market. WhatsApp Stu at 082 752 1494 for more info on his product range. http://hillcricketballs.co.za/

“We do understand that the boys may be preparing or writing exams so we aim to finish by 11am,” Mynahs coach Philip Lanz told KZN10.com.

“If there are boys playing premier league cricket on Sunday we will try and put them first but can’t guarantee this as it depends on numbers.

“Players are to wear cricket practice kit and must supply their own equipment and cricket ball. If they have stats from the season this will enhance their chances of selection.”

The Kingsmead Mynahs XI will be chosen at this trial and will play cricket at a competitive level.

Mynahs will play on Friday 30th November in the afternoon and then go on a tour to the Midlands on Saturday 1st December to Monday 3rd and then play 2 more games on the 5th and 6th.

“It is important to note for parents and the boys that they must please ensure players are available for these dates before sending them to trials,” says Philip.

“We are looking for boys who have played in their school 1st team, 2nd team or U16A this year and who will more than likely play in the 1st team in 2019.

“We are looking for players who have the potential to play representative cricket at a later stage.

“From the last couple of years a number of players have made the KZN U19 or U17 Coastal and Inland teams after making the Kingsmead Mynahs side the year before.

Westville’s King Carney: Crushing the Hockey Astro

WESTVILLE first team hockey match-winner Caleb Carney has a ravenous hunger in the strike zone that is the hallmark of all sharpshooters.

Westville Boys’ High School first team head coach and hockey director Cameron Mackay: “Caleb is a striker. He has a fantastic hunger for the ball and is great in the press; he constantly works hard to fight for ball in the press.”

Renate Montgomery feature image: King Carney’s rocket-propelled grenade is split-secs away from ballooning the net.

Caleb is now in grade 12; does coach Cam see future potential?

“He’s definitely got a massive future ahead of him. Caleb works really hard and has a great temperament.”

Cam said it; and KZN10.com thinks King Carney’s got the goods to do it.

Caleb Carney… if you watch a hockey match in which the Westville Boys’ High and national title-winning KZN Coastal striker is involved, you quickly will take notice – he’s fast, strong on the ball, got quicksilver hands and a great goalshot.

So I wanted to know more about the Westville talisman.

Hi Caleb, it’s great to have you on KZN10.com.

“Thanks sir, I appreciate your interest.”

Durban boy through and through?

“I was born in Durban; hometown is Hillcrest, in grade 12 and 18 years old.”

Your work rate, love of the game, dedication, all the training, all the match play, does it get a bit much at times?

“At times it can be sapping but for the most part it amps me to be with the team and to be on the Astro as often as possible.”

Caleb, I watched just about every KZN Coastal A game at the iWYZE U18 Hockey Nationals; I got the impression that you are a hockey forward with abundant talent and then some. What is it about playing striker that you enjoy and adds value to the team?

“Yes I am a striker/forward, my natural instinct is to attack and score goals – I am most recognised for my ability to score, as well as to create goals for my team, hence striker is the position at which I can lead from the front and add value most effectively.”

Compact and definitely not goal-shy. Little wonder that his favourite soccer player is one Wayne Rooney.

Caleb you have no doubt played other sports, so what is it about hockey?

“I play football and cricket but hockey is my favourite because not only have I achieved the most in it but I have also made the most connections and built valuable friendships through it.”

You have probably got a pretty good hockey CV. Please tell us about it.

“It’s been quite a journey so far, for sure.

“It all started with U13B KZN (won Gold at Maritzburg College) where I also received top goal scorer. U14A KZN (won gold at Jeppe), U16B KZN (won Gold at Kearsney), U16A KZN (won Bronze at St John’s), U18A KZN (Kearsney) and U18A KZN (won Gold at Maritzburg College this year – Selected for U18B SA Schools).”

To experience, is everything. Especially when it’s a five-star experience.  https://www.fordoun.com/

It’s certainly been a path of recognition – I felt you were most unfortunate not to get the nod for the SA Schools A side that played against Australia Schoolboys U17 but so be it.

No, let’s explore this further: I am not alone in saying you had an excellent iWYZE U18 Boys Hockey Nationals in July at Maritzburg College’s Papes (where KZN Coastal did so well in winning the SA title) and on the AB Jackson Astro, so not being selected for the SA U18A hockey team must have come as a blow.

Obviously you must have been hugely disappointed.

How do you hope to put that disappointment behind you and perhaps even use it as a motivating force in taking your hockey to the next level? Do you think that in 2019 you will be an even better hockey player?

“Yes, making the SA U18B team and not the national A side was a disappointment but it was still an honour to be recognised. I do think that I will be a better player in 2019 as I always give 100%.”

What are your plans for next year?

“My plans for hockey in 2019 are not 100% mapped out as yet but I intend to play club hockey and work very hard in search of further recognition, be it provincial or national selection.”

How many years have you played first XI hockey at Westville and how do you feel your game has developed since your debut?

“I played 3 years first team under our coach Mr Cameron Mackay, who is also Westville director of hockey, achieving 50 caps.

London-based Arthur Wormington is your expert when it comes to UK property investments. He’s also a recent SA hockey forward – at the Masters World Cup in Barcelona. http://megaprop.co.uk/

“My game has come a long way and I have matured as a hockey player in general as a result of the excellent coaching and High Performance Programme at Westville.”

What has been your most memorable Westville hockey game and why?

“It was in 2016 against Kearsney at Kearsney in the KZN Top 8 Tournament where we won 3-2. It was one of my first games as a junior for Westville first side and I played alongside my brother Chad Carney.

“I scored an upright back-stick goal to get us to 2-1 right after Kearsney had equalised. I will never forget the way we celebrated that goal, as I found myself under a pile of senior team-mates all cheering.”

As far as 2018 Westville firsts hockey is concerned, who were the players in your team that you feel had a particularly good year?

“Well, if I may say so, I feel that Keegan Gibbon and I played really well as a combination, collectively racking up the goals together. The team as a group really pulled together and worked hard towards the common goal.

“The Westville first team hockey season would never have turned out so well without the complete buy-in from the team.”

As said, I have seen you play a number of hockey matches this year.

What struck me is your energy upfront and mobility both in terms of pace and lateral and vertical movement on and off the ball.

Caleb Carney (middle, front) on the day of his 50th appearance for Westville firsts – and what a memory it was: success over the strong Maritzburg College line-up on his home turf.

Do you put in a lot of conditioning and fitness work or does it come from being on the turf a lot?

You also have very quick hands and are able to use your stickwork to win penalty corner scoring opportunities; to create space for your team-mates in the scoring zone; as well as manufacture goalshot chances of your own.

Have you always displayed these characteristics in your hockey or has it been something you’ve worked on?

“I think explosive pace and energy, as well as quick hands and scoring ability have been strengths of mine from a young age.

“Conditioning and fitness have improved over time and with that has exploited my natural ability to the fullest. Plus of course the amount of time on the turf, which also contributes to improvement.

“Quick hands and eye for the goal are aspects that we diligently worked on with Mr Mackay at trainings and the more time we spent on the turf the better I became in these aspects of the game.”

Effective strikers are often targeted… Inevitably closely marked and shadowed by dogged defenders whose singular focus when your team is in position is
a) to stop you getting the ball
and
b) prevent you from unloading  goalshots
– and probably a couple of other things too.

It can be niggly, annoying stuff, as many a frustrated striker will tell you, so how would you describe your temperament on the turf?

“Aaaah that’s easy sir; tenacious yet calm and relaxed under pressure.”

Short and sweet; uncomplicated. I like.

Have all the options at your fingertips. http://titantech.co.za/

Westville first hockey team had an outstanding season. The consistent run of form… – was a lot of it due to Mr Mackay? How has he helped improve your game?

Yes, the success of the Westville first hockey team was hugely due to our coach Cameron Mackay.

“Although tough, hard on the boys, Mr Mackay also knows how to have fun with us. The hard, uncompromising no-excuses nature of his coaching pushes the boys to do well and improve, whilst the fun aspect keeps them motivated.

“Over the years Mr Mackay has pushed and encouraged me to always do better and achieve my full potential. He has backed me and believed in me since I began at the school in grade 8.

“I would not be the hockey player I am today if it were not for the instrumental role that Mr Mackay played in my career; as my coach and mentor.

“There have been other coaches that have also contributed to my success on the turf but none quite as majorly as Mr Mackay, thank you sir, I owe much to you.”

Who better to coach a hugely promising striker than a highly experienced striker? Caleb Carney’s mentor is the highly regarded Cameron Mackay.

Grateful players… Not necessarily easy to find, especially the talented individuals for whom it comes so easily at school level.

I suspect that Caleb Carney has got two vital aspects of his hockey development nailed down – hard (smart) work makes for maximising natural talent.

So Caleb, at what age did you start playing hockey, which primary school and where is it, and which coaches, apart from Mr Mackay, have had the most influence in growing your game – and how?

“Sir, I started playing hockey at the age of 6 at Hillcrest Primary School. My first major influence as a coach was Mr Scott Munn, who told me that whatever I did I should never stop playing hockey.

“Another majorly influential coach was Mike Baker my KZN U13B coach, who nicknamed me King Carney and backed me when few others did.”

Has the support of family and friends or particular people been a boost in the good times and the bad?

“Yes sir, definitely. My very supportive family and friends have helped me through disappointments and success throughout the years.

“My family have always been at my games in full force, as well as some of my friends, and it always gave me the extra boost looking up and seeing them watching.

If one thinks of the thousands of hockey-playing schoolboys across the country, you have achieved much in your school hockey career and have worked hard for your recognition and rewards.

Sharp shooters have sharp eyesight. Take the Hilliar & Gray test. http://www.hilliarandgray.co.za/contact/

Do you think it might be difficult to motivate yourself to keep working on improving your hockey once school is out and the personality that is Caleb Carney moves on to the next adventure?

“No sir, I love playing hockey and that will always drive me to improve wherever I am playing. My only aim is to have fun and enjoy my hockey. If the fun and the enjoyment are present that is when I play my best.”

Caleb (I love King Carney, thanks for the nickname Bakes!) what has your time at Westville Boys taught you? After all, you have spent 5 years at one of South Africa’s most highly regarded boys high schools.

“Aaaah that’s easy sir. Westville Boys has taught me to always act with respect and integrity. Our motto is the key to what Westville stands for: It says, “Stay the Course” and “May I not shrink from my Purpose”.

“What Westville Boys’ High School has taught me is to stay true. Humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Respect your elders and honour those who deserve to be honoured.  I am a Westville Boy and I shall stay true to all I am and never shrink from my purpose. This is what Westville Boys has taught me.”

Phew. Goose-bump stuff. I’m ready to take to the turf right now if King Carney is on my shoulder. Maybe not. Some things are best left undone.

Knowing his game means Lucienne (065 301 3095) is best-placed to connect your way. https://www.cellc.co.za/

To wrap it up let’s hear more on King Carney from Westville first team head coach and director of hockey, the highly regarded Cameron Scott Mackay:

“Thanks Jono… Apart from what I said earlier, or in conjunction with my earlier words, Caleb is a hardworking young man who possesses strengths that add so much value.

“Caleb is strong, fast and resilient; he can hit a ball better than most and has a deadly backhand.

“He has also become a fantastic penalty corner drag flicker, scoring plenty of goals this year. His natural touch in front of goal this year saw him finish on 26 goals. During his 50 caps he scored 46 goals.

“But perhaps the key is that Caleb is a gentleman on and off the field and a pleasure to coach.

“Caleb Carney is the epitome of a true Westville Boy.”

Phew some more – Cam Mackay doesn’t give away praise easily; you’ve got to earn it by your actions. Clearly King Carney has passed the Cam Test with flying colours.

KZN10.com wishes you everything of the best, Caleb, in life and your hockey future.

Go get young man.
