THE teams are arriving on the iconic Forder Oval at host school Maritzburg College yes it’s the 59th Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week
The Week is the oldest and one of the most prestigious schoolboy cricket weeks in South Africa. Michaelmas Week has long been revered as the cricketing highlight of the year in the traditional schools’ cricket calendar – this year promises to be no different.
Some of South Africa, and the world’s, biggest cricket names have come through Michaelmas Week, and many look back fondly on their time at the Week as a test of cricketing skill and excellence.
The 2018 edition will see an increased list of schools, as the Week now hosts 22 cricketing powerhouse teams from some of South Africa’s greatest schools. Westlake Boys College from New Zealand return as well this year, adding another international flavour to the Week.

The Week is sponsored by Mr Jonathan Oppenheimer, a proud and staunch supporter of cricket and cricket development in South Africa.
“Maritzburg College is proud to be the custodian school of the Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week. Whilst the home of Michaelmas Week is Maritzburg College, the Week belongs to the schools that make up the rich history and prestige of this week,” said Michaelmas Week Director and Deputy Headmaster at Maritzburg College, Brandon Swart.
The Week plays out over the next 4 days at grounds all over the KZN Capital city and the Midlands.
Swart added, “The support of Mr Jonathan Oppenheimer, as the sponsor of the week, is invaluable. This support ensures that the Week stays affordable for the players in an economy where prices are soaring.
Mr Oppenheimer’s investment in youth cricket and the development of the game is showing a direct result on the talent progressing into our national cricket programme.”
The sponsorship from Mr Oppenheimer has been in place since 2004 and has ensured the success of this great cricket week.”
Starting Saturday, September 29 through to Tuesday, October 2, a fascinating week of cricket lies ahead and the iconic sound of leather and willow will be echoing long over the next few days.
