Michaelhouse 8 Feb 2020 sports round-up vs Maritzburg College
Not even aquatic sports were spared by the weather on the 8 Feb 2020 weekend with dangerously high water levels scuppering the interschools’ Bushman’s River canoe race and a 3rd of the 9 scheduled water polo fixtures against Maritzburg College abandoned because of the inclement conditions.
Michaelhouse enjoyed a good day out in the grandstand events in the Dudley Forde Pool at Maritzburg College, winning the 1st team (9-8), U15A (7-4) and U14A (7-5) clashes.

A mixed junior Michaelhouse team also came away with a tight 9-7 win, but the second (2-8) and fifth teams (7-8) were not as fortunate.
With all 14 cricket matches against Maritzburg College called off, it was up to the basketballers to provide the sporting entertainment, despite 9 matches on the outdoor courts having to be scrapped.
With five consecutive wins over College, the Boys from Balgowan went into the first team clash in a confident frame of mind.

The previous week’s slip-up against DHS under similar circumstances, though, would have provided a little tension to the Men of House’s minds.
In the end, it was a narrow, low-scoring affair with Michaelhouse coming the beneficiaries of a hard-won 38-34 victory.
Of the remaining 5 Open age group fixtures, Michaelhouse were able to record wins by the 3rd, 4th and 6th teams.

House’s U16A lads continued to battle with their rhythm, going down 27-36, with the B side also capitulating in the only other match contested in the age group.
Michaelhouse’s U15A boys made it 5 from 5 in 2020 with their 23-16 win, while the House B and C sides came out on the losing side of the scoreline.
College clinched the U14A contest 28-18, while House were able to hold their nerve in the B team match for a 14-13 win.

2 Sets of Twins square off as Saints take on Treverton in basketball
St Charles College do not often get the opportunity to play against Treverton College in basketball and therefore it was a nice break from the regular fixtures this past weekend.
Treverton were definitely considered the underdogs in this game as they took on a Saints team which is currently unbeaten and has won its previous fixtures comfortably.

Treverton, however, had an upset in mind as they kept the game close in the first period with sharp-shooting from the 3-point line.
The Saints, although not playing well, remained calm and stayed in their systems, looking to penetrate the defence and open up the shooting channels.
St Charles College eventually found their rhythm in the second quarter and started to open up the lead.

With good running basketball and some good outside shooting, the Saints were able to extend their lead and, with the pressure off, play some excellent basketball.
Credit must be given to Treverton, who remained committed to the game throughout and fought with everything they had.
The final score saw the Saints winning 60-32.
Down in Durban, the Saints 2nd team managed to win a tight encounter against Glenwood’s 1st team, final score, 24-21.

Hilton vs Kearsney in Schools T20 Challenge Dolphins franchise final next Thursday
The final of the CSA Dolphins Franchise Schools T20 Challenge between KZN Coastal winners Kearsney College first XI and KZN Inland winners Hilton College first XI will take place from 2pm on Thursday, 20th February at the picturesque Maritzburg Oval in the KZN capital.
The final was originally scheduled for Feb 27 but the spanner in the works was that Hilton are scheduled to be at the annual St Albans College-hosted Independent Schools Cricket Festival in Pretoria on that date.

Consultation between the various parties and stakeholders found an amicable solution in moving the much-anticipated match-up between the two most successful sides in KZN schoolboy cricket this year a week forward.
Kearsney College under captain Cade Carmichael beat Clifton College in the KZN Coastal T20 final on January 31 while Hilton College under captain Colby Dyer beat Michaelhouse in the KZN Inland final on January 27.
The winners of next week’s Feb 20 final will qualify for the CSA Schools T20 Challenge Franchise Finals, to be held at Tuks in Pretoria from March 6th to the 8th.

Last year, first-time Dolphins franchise winners St Charles College were runners-up at the nationals after losing to St Stithians College in the final at Tuks.
Inland winners The Saints beat Coastal winners Westville in the 2019 Dolphins franchise final last year.
If my memory serves me correctly, the 2019 Westville first XI under captain Matthew Pollard beat Glenwood in last year’s KZN Coastal final.
2020 KZN Coastal T20 winners Kearsney College on the AH Smith Oval.
In 2018 the Hilton College first XI lost in the national final to St Andrews School Bloemfontein, so it has been close but no cigar for the KZN10 schools in recent times.
There have been other national T20 finals in this event where the KZN10 school representing the Dolphins franchise have lost by a whisker.
To my knowledge, the Dolphins franchise Schools T20 champions have never won the national final, although I think Maritzburg College – and certainly Hilton College (at least twice, once off the last ball of the final) – have been finalists in the past.
Let’s hope the 2020 Dolphins schoolboy T20 champs will go all the way at the Nationals.

Clifton 1st XI end Kearsney 1st XI’s 10-match winning streak
Clifton College first XI took advantage of the crucial toss of the coin to break the Kearsney College first XI’s outstanding 10-match winning streak at Riverside in Durban North on Saturday.
It appeared nigh-inevitable that the outcome of the 45-over match would be decided on who won the toss between captains Nabeel Jeewa (CC) and Cade Carmichael (KC) and it was the Clifton skipper who ended on the right side of the call, having no hesitation in electing to bowl.

Heavy rain during the week and overcast conditions produced a Riverside greentop, which had the seamers on both sides eager with anticipation.

Batting was going to be a mission in the morning session, and so it proved.
Clifton’s seamers had the batsmen under the cosh, with Kearsney losing wickets at regular intervals.
The pick of the seamers was Ronan Vardaya (2-17 in 7 overs) and Josh Platford (1-21 in 9).
Not to be outdone, the Clifton spinners also extracted turn and bounce with Marco Mottura (2-30 in 9) and grade 10 Ross Montgomery (2-2 in 1) doing significant damage.

An interesting run-out, which was later repeated in the Clifton innings, added to the drama.
Only Kearsney’s Rubin Rheeder (34) and the in-form Dylan Hulett (28) managed some resistance in the difficult batting conditions.
And full marks to the efficient Clifton bowling attack that didn’t take its foot off the gas – Kearsney all out for 113 in 37 of the allotted 45 overs.
By the afternoon the wicket had flattened out in the sun and wind, with conditions therefore improving for batting.

True to form in a first term that on a number of occasions has seen victory resurrected from the gaping jaws of what seemed to be inevitable defeat, Cade Carmichael’s never-say-die Kearsney lads were not going down without a fight.
The Kearsney bowling attack made Clifton work hard for their runs.
Dean Gibbs (3-22 in 9) and spinner Josh Stocks – the picture of control and economy in taking 1 wicket for 9 runs in 9 miserly overs – kept the batsmen honest and Clifton eventually passed the target in the 35th over with seven wickets down.

Clifton’s Nabeel Jeewa played a captain’s knock in scoring a gritty, match-winning 57 and making exactly half of the total runs need for victory.

KZN10.com website and social media wishes Maritzburg College Old Boy (Class of 2000) Brad Robinson everything of the best for the SA Masters Open Bowls Championships at Wingate Park Country Club in Pretoria today through Sunday.
KZN10.com caught up with Brad in Pretoria and asked this former Maritzburg College 2nd XI and UKZN Pietermaritzburg 1st XI cricketer (9 handicap golfer) to tell us more.
“Thanks Jono, yes I have fond memories of my 5 years at Maritzburg College.
“Jono, the SA Masters Open competition consists of the top 16 bowlers in the country, of whom 12 or so have represented the Proteas while the others are, like me, members of the SA Gold Squad.”
Brad and his 18-month-old eldest son, Mason Neil Robinson.
Brad (36) knows who will be super-keen to see him when he returns to his hometown – 18-month-old Mason Neil (Neil is the name of Brad’s well-known late dad) and baby brother the 8-week-old Cole.
Methinks Brad’s wife Rezelle will be as much relieved as she will be pleased to see her hubby after 4 days flying solo with these two pocket rockets.

“There is no bronze medal match for the section runners-up; they each get a bronze medal,” says Brad.
“The reasoning behind that is to ensure that all the focus is on the final.”
Too right! That is the way it should be in all sports. Surely there isn’t a sports lover on the planet who wants bronze medal matches anymore?
“This will be my 5th SA Masters Open and my 3rd in a row,” says Brad. “I played in 2 SA Masters 7 and 8 years ago, then wasn’t selected for 4 years.”

Pietermaritzburg-based Brad, who started playing competitive bowls at the age of 11, is a chartered accountant and senior manager at Price Waterhouse Coopers.
So what’s it like at Wingate Country Club in Pretoria, Brad?
“Jono, it’s a great setting here at Wingate; 6 greens catering for the 16 SA Masters Open bowlers, the same number in the equivalent ladies’ competition; then the SA Masters Under-30’s – that’s 12 bowlers in each of the male and female competitions – and finally the Over-60’s SA Masters Veterans, which is 12 men and 12 women, so it’s going to be pretty busy.”

Tough KZN Coastal T20 quarter-finals in store at Kearsney tomorrow
The KZN Coastal section playoffs in the CSA Schools T20 Challenge take place at Kearsney College this Thursday and Friday (30 and 31 January).
The first-round draw has certainly been kinder (on paper) to two of the six KZN10.com focus schools in the greater Durban region than it has been on the other 4.
Thursday morning’s 9am quarter-final matches see Glenwood tackle Westville and Clifton College take on DHS.

The draw for Thursday afternoon’s 1pm quarter-finals reflects Northwood vs Kloof and Kearsney College up against Thomas More College.
A further draw will take place after Thursday afternoon’s quarter-finals are complete, with the names of the winners going into the hat to determine who plays who in Friday’s 9am semi-finals.
The semi-final winners will meet in the KZN Coastal T20 final at 1pm Friday.

St Charles and Maritzburg College advance to tomorrow’s KZN Inland T20 semi-finals
Partnerships of 117 then 56 then 35 propelled the seeded St Charles College first XI to 217/6 in their allotted 20 overs in quarter-final 2 of the CSA KZN Inland Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge against qualifiers Pongola Hub first XI on the Jack Hart-Davis Oval at Hilton College this morning. In reply, Pongola were bowled out for 63 to give the Saints victory by 154 runs.
Jason Muirhead (3 wickets for 2 runs) and Nathan Lunderstedt (2 for 16) were the primary wicket-takers for St Charles with Keegan Crawford, Tim Login and Jens Lutge getting one apiece to add to the run outs (Steven Scott).
In quarter-final 1 it was one-way traffic for the seeded Maritzburg College first XI against qualifiers Alexandra High School first XI(see below).
Defending KZN Inland champions, reigning Dolphins franchise champions and 2019 national title finalists St Charles College first XI lost a wicket without a run on the scoreboard (Pongola’s opening bowler Sbonelo Nkosi trapping the in-form Nathan Lunderstedt in front) before opening batsman Taygen Mollentze and first wicket Hayden Raw powered 117 for the second wicket, this after Pongola had won the toss and put the Saints in.

KZN Inland T20 knockout finals kick off at Hilton this morning
The KZN Inland CSA Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge playoffs get into gear with the first two quarter-final matches at 9am at Hilton College this morning.
Two of the four qualifiers come up against two of the four seeded teams in this morning’s quarter-finals with the last two quarter-finals kicking off at 1pm today.
Tomorrow sees the semi-finals at 9am and the final at 1pm.

The 1pm quarter-finals today see Michaelhouse first XI meeting St Dominic’s of Newcastle on Weightman-Smith and Hilton College first XI versus Treverton College on Hart-Davis.
In tomorrow, Wednesday’s, 9am semi-finals (unless a qualifier springs a major surprise) it is scheduled to be Maritzburg College vs Michaelhouse (on Weightman-Smith) and St Charles vs Hilton (Hart-Davis).

As to who will reach the final it’s anyone’s guess, although Hilton would be title favourites to most who follow schoolboy cricket.
The Coastal champions will take on the KZN Inland champs in the Dolphins franchise final at the PMB Oval. The final is scheduled for 27 February.
This may change if sides like Hilton College, who are scheduled to play in the annual Independent Schools Cricket Festival hosted by St Albans College in Pretoria from 26 February to 1 March, qualify for the Dolphins final.

Last year, first-time Dolphins franchise winners St Charles College were runners-up at the nationals after losing to St Stithians College in the final at Tuks.
Inland winners The Saints beat Coastal winners Westville in the 2019 Dolphins franchise final last year.
To my knowledge, the Dolphins champions have never won the national final, although I think Maritzburg College – and certainly Hilton College (at least twice) – have been finalists in the past.

St Charles College 1st XI better Clifton by 38 runs & Grey Bloem by 42
St Charles College first XI played host to Clifton College on The Saints Oval on Saturday, 18 January 2020 in what was the first outing in the first term of the new year. Clifton College won the toss and elected to bowl.
After a slow start, the St Charles College middle order came to the fore in the latter half of the innings and took the total to a defendable 179/7 off the allotted 50 overs.

Clifton, in reply, got off to a quick start after SCC had set attacking fields, but after a few quick wickets before the 10th over, they were unable to keep up the momentum.

The impressive St Charles College first XI win against Clifton comes on the back of a commanding 42-run victory over the Grey College first XI in Bloemfontein, to make it two emphatic victories from two outings for the Saints first XI this year.
Nathan Lunderstedt was the mainstay of the Saints innings vs Grey College in Bloemfontein, while Saints fast bowler Keegan Crawford wreaked havoc amongst the Grey College batsmen, backed to the hilt by Lunderstedt.
